Paul Kayhart first began recording sound when he was a pre-teen in New Jersey in the early 1960s. Since then he has always possessed at least one recording device at any given time. The sources for his recordings are virtually unlimited.
Kayhart studied engineering at Rutgers and has a BFA in Film and Video from the Hartford Art School in Connecticut. His sound compositions and manipulations can be variously evocative, emotive and provocative. His sound works range from collaborative elements in installation, dance, performance and publication, to principal components for his own site-specific and recorded compositions. And most recently, he is creating a series of independent short video pieces.
His published works include Thorn Upon the Rose, a 45-minute audio CD (sound collected while in residence at The Tyrone Guthrie Centre at Annaghmakerrig in Ireland) accompanying the book of that title by Elizabeth Lide; Machine, an apocalyptic multilayered composition included on the vinyl compilation album La Resistance c’est Homegrown from frequeNC Records; and Bird2, a limited-edition CD.
His commissions include scores for publicly presented performances by choreographers Nicole Livieratos (Turn The Page at FLUX Night, Doubt for EDGE in Unexpected Spaces at the Healy Building in Atlanta, Path 1 at whitespec in Atlanta) and Blake Beckham (Terminal at Emory University, Dearly Departures at DramaTech Theater, GA Tech). Exhibitions include solo and collaborative works at MOCAGA, Atlanta, whitespec (Whitespace,) Atlanta: The Atlanta Contemporary Art Center; Sandler Hudson Gallery, Atlanta; Papier Mache Video Institute, New Haven CT; The Daniel Wadsworth Memorial Video Festival, Hartford CT; The Mattress Factory Show, Atlanta; and La Mama La Galleria, New York City. He has been a fellow at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (VCCA), The Tyrone Guthrie Centre and The Hambidge Center. He is the recipient of an Alternate Visions Grant (NEA, Rockefeller and Warhol Foundations); Artists Space Project Grant, New York City; and three Individual Artist Grants from the Bureau of Cultural Affairs, City of Atlanta.
Paul also has several audio works in the archives at Radius (an experimental radio broadcast platform and archive located in Chicago) and at FMA (Free Music Archive) In conjunction with the Wave Farm – Transmission Arts Program. These works have been featured in broadcast events on radio in 2016 and 2017 with simultaneous internet streaming.
For thirteen years he worked for CNN in Atlanta as a Senior Broadcast and IT engineer. From 1978 to 2001, he worked in post-production as a sound designer, videographer and editor and as a workshop instructor in Connecticut and Atlanta.
Paul continues to work independently, creating complex, multilayered sound compositions and video works in his studio in Atlanta.
